The Club's Senior Men head to the West Midlands on Saturday for the National 12-Stage Road Relays, having already made a little bit of Hercules history at the South of England Relays at Milton Keynes on March 27. For the first time ever HW qualified two teams for the Nationals – the only Southern Club to do so.

Champions

At last, after a hastily re-arranged fourth match in the Surrey Cross Country League (Storm Eunice saw off the intended fixture on Effingham Common), a scaled-down Senior Men’s team finally get their hands on the trophy in the icy winds and muds of Lloyd Park. The U17 Women and U13 Girls also topped their League, and the Senior Women finished an excellent sixth.. The U13 Boys finished in second, the U15 Girls in third and the combined U15 Boys and U17 Men in fourth. Full report to follow

National Treasures

A fantastic day at the National Cross Country Championships on Parliament Hill for the U20 Women, especially, as Ellen Weir won a brilliant individual silver medal and the team took bronze. Notably the U13 Boys finished 7th, the U17 Women 10th, and the Senior Men equalled the 8th place they achieved in 2018, the last time the Championships were held in London, with first HW man home, Dan Cliffe, finishing 33rd.

Congratulations to 18-year old Ellen Weir, who finished a fantastic fifth and first England athlete home in the U17/U20 race at the Northern Ireland International Cross Country meeting this afternoon (Saturday, 22 January). The event, which brought a class field to the Billy Neill MBE Country Park, Belfast, also incorporated the World Athletics Silver Cross Country Tour and Celtic Games, as well as the fourth match in the British Athletics Cross Challenge series.

While the HW Cross Country squads were racing in the cold and mud, around twenty of the Club's youngsters were competing in the more temperate climate of Lee Valley in the South of England U13-U17 Indoor Championships over the weekend of January 15/16, and collecting half a dozen medals between them.

On Course for the Title

The Senior Men’s team will go into the final Surrey Cross Country League match on Effingham Common next month with a lead of over 380 points, despite finishing second to Belgrave Harriers by the slimmest of margins on Saturday. Meanwhile the Senior Women’s team enjoyed their highest placing of the season so far, while Lulu Weisz won the U17 Women's race, Millie Thorpe was 4th and Abbie Grey 9th, despite slithering over in the mud, to secure the win for the team.

Surrey Silver

In bright sunshine at Denbies Vineyard in Dorking, on 9 January, Men's team captain Fred Slemeck and U20 Ellen Weir (above) won individual silver medals at the Surrey County Cross Country Championships while leading their teams to bronze, in the case of the Senior Men (who were winners at the same venue the last time the Championships were held in 2020), and silver for the combined U17 and U20 Women’s team, which included U17s Lulu Weisz and Millie Thorpe.

Opening Statement

The Senior Men's team laid down the gauntlet in Richmond Park last Saturday (16 October) with a decisive victory in the first match of the Surrey Cross Country League, winning by 164 points over Belgrave (319), with current League Champions Kent in third place on 345 points. Eight of the scoring ten packed into the top twenty; while the B team were also winners, again over Belgrave and Kent.

Sunday 26 September should have seen the third of the customary quartet of relay championships at this time of year (following the County Road Relays at Wimbledon Park on 4 September and the Track Relays over the weekend of the 11th and 12th September, and leading up to the National Road Relays on 9 October), however the Southern Road Relay Championships were abruptly cancelled just days before the race, due to an unsafe stand at Crystal Palace, where they were due to be staged.
